Mark Bennett will MC Laff Hut open mic Thursday

When he’s not snorting MXE and drinking Purell “to hydrate”, Mark Bennett is chasing elementary school kids across playgrounds with a lacrosse stick until he’s tazed by the cops, hogtied and hauled away while convulsing and foaming at the mouth. 

When he’s not waking up in a puddle of his own vomit, urine, and bloody stool on a cold cell floor, awaiting his court date on multiple charges of attempted assault on a minor at a public school, he’s eating Sterno and imagining he is a wealthy and successful author of romance novels. 

Don’t stand there and watch his eyes roll upon his head as he sits on a bench in front of Target shouting, “Where is my parchment! My quills! I fancy that have a steamy yarn to spin!” Come watch him MC the Laff Hut open mic 8 pm Thursday night! Sign-up is 7 pm.

Bio Ritmo? Bio Nogitmo

When we asked our MC for the Thursday, May 17 open mic, Josh “Max” Maxwell, to provide a short biography, we expected the usual charming, off-kilter, self-depreciating malarkey he routinely spouts. What we got was a hand-written note delivered by a visibly-exasperated young woman who, when questioned about the folded piece of paper, said, “You tell Max he can kiss my ass!” 

This is how the note read:
Max has asked me to write the brief bio he was supposed to submit but forgot to do. Surprise, surprise. Once again it falls on me to pick up after him. So while he’s out “hittin’ some bitchin’ steeps on his board,” I’m left with his responsibilities. So here’s the Max in a nutshell. Max is by far the least responsible person on the planet. His school-boy charm isn’t fooling anybody. He’s just a rudderless hippie. His lack of maturity is trumped only by his “Fuk It” mentality. He needs to grow the fuck up. The only thing funny about him is his skill in bed. I hope he gets dick cancer.

Whitney Cummings isn’t my thing. I’ve watched clips of her stand-up on YouTube, and almost always closed the browser before she was done talking. Jokes about “women are [crazy] like THIS, and men are like THAT!” aren’t my cup of tea, but I still tuned into the first two episodes of Whitney, in the same way I’ll watch the first two episodes of any other TV show I have no personal interest in but whose existence is made into a cultural touchstone. I went in ready to hate it, but it was fine. The show and I could make a détente work - I stopped watching, and Whitney Cummings (presumably) agreed not to care that I did.

Shooting for 40 people tomorrow

Attendance at last week’s open mic was 30. We’re shooting for 40 for tomorrow’s show with CB Wilkins as your MC with a long-term goal of filling all 92 seats. Last week’s donations: zero, nada, nothing. Come on, people, I know you can do better than that. Donations will be used to defray the cost of publicity and send Shawn, the bouncer at Cafe Diem, to Barbados. The five-minute limit will be enforced more strictly this time out. However, comics present at 7 pm will draw out of a hat to do ten minutes. We’ll also be giving out prizes, assuming that I can remember to bring them.
